Round Rock Utilities posts strong finish at Hydrant Hysteria nationals
Shane Carroll, Bobby Hepner and Alfredo Vences take fifth place in hydrant-building competition

After winning first place in American Water Works Association’s (AWWA) Texas Hydrant Hysteria Competition in April, Utilities employees Shane Carroll, Bobby Hepner and Alfredo Vences headed to Las Vegas this month to take fifth place in the nation.

Hydrant Hysteria is a fast-paced competition in which two-member teams must work in unison to assemble a fire hydrant as quickly as they can. Winners of the statewide competition during AWWA Section Conferences receive a free trip to the nationals, which are conducted at AWWA’s Annual Conference and Exposition.

Round Rock’s team, which dubbed themselves “Hard CORR,” were chosen by an internal competition at a quarterly Utilities staff meeting, and were able to build a hydrant from the ground up in one minute, 21 seconds at nationals. Vences served as the team’s coach, with Carroll and Hepner working in tandem to complete the task at hand.

Congratulations to these three for representing the City of Round Rock and the State of Texas well, finishing first in the qualifier and fifth in the finals!
